Getting out of the ‘guns, germs and steel’ crisis

India faces a “guns, germs and steel” crisis, to borrow from the title of Jared Diamond’s classic book on the evolution of societies and nations, Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies. There are Chinese “guns” on the borders. There are coronavirus “germs” in our bodies. There are “steel” makers and other businesses on the verge of bankruptcy.

In this regard, the government has mainly 2 options to finance the triple crisis of guns, germs and steel” -

    1. Borrow money from the Market
    2. Borrow directly from the RBI.
    • Printing of Currency Notes
    • Monetization of Deficit in India
    • Challenges with Direct Monetization of Government’s deficit
    • Counter Arguments
    • Is it the right time to go for Direct Monetization?

    Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyaan

The lockdown imposed due to COVID-19 has forced a number of people to migrate back to the rural areas. Such form of reverse migration from urban to rural areas is quite predominant in states such as UP, Bihar, MP, Rajasthan etc.

Now, these people who have migrated back to the rural areas need to be provided with the employment opportunities in the rural areas so that they can meet their livelihood needs. At the same time, the availability of surplus labor in the rural areas has to be taken advantage by creating durable assets such as irrigation canals, roads, check dams etc. which can bring down comprehensive development of rural areas. Hence, in this regard, recently on June 20th, PM Modi had announced the "‘Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyaan’.
